Hello! Q here. Yuh know, every day of this week I’ve heard at least one sermon on how much money youths spend on clothes, and frankly, I’m tired of people trying to chain me up to stop spending money on clothes, especially sneakers.

Now if you do spend lots of money on clothes, you’re just like me in that respect, however, our reasons may differ. Now I would never buy a piece of brands because some rich songster wore the exact garment on a soulful music video, like Snoop Doggy Dogg and his Hilfiger gear. Neither will I buy a style because everybody who is somebody and their brother is in it, like those shiny, new, nylon team T-shirts. I would by a style though, because I like it, and for no other reason. You see, to me, your clothes say who you are. Your style of dress goes hand in hand with your personality. Style is an individual thing, thus, the only thing that should influence the way you dress is the way you feel. I’m not implying that this is my only reason for purchasing seven pairs of sneakers, which I still have, during 1996, my point is I am not influenced by any type of external pressure. I do what I have to do.

Well if you’re observant, you may have noticed that I have a weakness for sweetness; the sweetness being sneakers. Let me defend my hobby firstly by saying, it’s one of the safest vices a youth-man like me could have these days. Some may smoke, some may drink and others may gamble I buy sneakers. You really do lose some hard earned dollars, but it’s better than getting cancer or damaging your liver, and you win something with your money every time. Apart from that, I believe that the real reason for my addiction lies within the fact that I studied Art and Design at school, and became very fascinated by all types of art. In my vision, sneakers are the most trampled on pieces of art. The next time you see a pair of sneakers, take a few seconds and study the design. On select pieces, such as the AIR JORDAN, the AIR ZOOM and the AIR MAX TAILWIND, the designs are as interesting as Art Nouveau and as intricate as art from the Baroque period. (my next purchase is a toss up between these three styles).

Unfortunately, a pair of sneakers just cannot stand alone, since it is unsafe, in more ways than one, to wear nothing but a pair of sneakers in public. You then need to fortify your expensive looking sneakers with an expensive looking pair of jeans. The same applies to the jeans. A nice pair of jeans with a nice pair of sneakers deserves a nice jersey or T-shirt. A bare back in public just won’t be appropriate.

There it is. From sneakers, to jeans, from jeans to T-shirt or jersey. It’s a chain that mustn’t be broken. It hurts to hear people saying ” dem young people can’t dress. They dose only by a set of expensive clothes that don’t look good.” when we well at least I, put so much thought into what I’m wearing.
